In 1985, I was put in touch with the late Janice Roberts and was “interviewed” at great length before being allowed to own a Cornevon Irish Setter. After much deliberation I made my choice and she was Honeypie of Cornevon known to her friends as “Sam”.

She was later to become my first Show Champion attaining 5C.C.’s and 3 R.C.C.’s.
“Sam” was quite remarkable and regardless of her success in the Show-ring, she and I were soul mates. She had the most super Irish Setter temperament and was never more mischievous than when in the ring. She loved an audience, was never fazed by anything and applause, even at the other end
of the showground was, she believed, all for her!
She never stopped making me smile and I simply adored her. |

I was truly hooked on the Irish Setter temperament and in 1986 again from Janice I got Shona of Cornevon ("Suzi").
She had a promising show career and achieved 1C.C. and 1. R.C.C. before being retired from the show ring due to an illness from which she eventually fully recovered.
She and Sam were the best of friends and my Kennel Club affix is derived from both their names (Sam et Suz). Unfortunately
I didn’t have any children from her, but she was very beautiful and always believed she was : “too good for this place”! |

Honeypie had two love affairs, the first with Dunnygask Vital Spark from which came my Sametsuz Hop Scotch ("Mattie").
She too had a successful show career and gained 1 C.C .& 2 R.C.C.’s before winning the title of Irish Setter of the Year 1997 at the I.S.A.E. competition.

Honeypie’s second “arrangement” was with
the famous Sh.Ch. Danaway Debonair (“D.D.”) who was Best in Show at Crufts 1993. I again kept a girl Sametsuz Simply Super (“Topsy”)
and was able to send a boy to Jean Ryan in
the U.S.A.
He became American and Canadian Champion Sametsuz Ard Righ and as well as having a very successful show career sired a number of top winning children there and his influence is now being felt in his grand-children who are now achieving top honours.

Like her mother, Mattie, (S. Hop Scotch) was a little earth mother
and when introduced to Sh.Ch. Shenanagin Stockbroker she decided he was the boy for her.
On the same day that Mattie had her 12 pups a Beagle called Missy, owned by a friend had given birth to a single puppy. 4 of Mattie’s pups where “adopted” by Missy until they were weaned and then Bob the Beagle came back with Mattie’s pups and was reared with the Irish Setters. I’m sure he’s
still confused as to what breed he really is!

Mattie’s children from this litter really shone!
My own Sh.Ch. Sametsuz Mak’n Mischief ("Missy" named in honour of Beagle, Missy) had a glittering show career during which she won 9 C.C.’s, 6 R.C.C’s, and Gundog Group 1 at Leeds Championship Show in 2002. She also delighted me by repeating her mothers’ achievement of Irish Setter of the Year
2002 at the I.S.A.E. competition.
She is was special and will always be remembered.

Other brothers and sisters include Mon. Champion Sametsuz Mak’n Good (Max) for Ailsa Harvey (Dunnygask) now resident in France, Sametsuz Mak’n Waves (Breagha) who became the foundation bitch for Ro & Nigel Cox (Tiroen) in Jersey and Sametsuz Mak’n Music
at Cornevon for Penny and Trevor Jeffries in Norfolk.
These dogs all hold a special place in my heart, I hope you enjoyed reading about them as much as I have enjoyed reliving the memories
